Game Developers Choice Awards finalists announced

02.10.09

The finalists for this year’s Game Developers Choice Awards have been announced, with Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet adoring judges with nine nominations, including one for Game of the Year. Other titles up for the prestigious award include Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Grand Theft Auto IV and, of course, Fable 2. The Joystiq darling is also a shoe in for snub of the year with Lionhead’s opus going overlooked entirely in the Best Writing category. Seriously, what’s the deal?

Braid, Far Cry 2, Spore, World of Goo, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gears of War 2 are all up for multiple awards, with winners set to take the stage during next month’s gala event as part of the 2009 Game Developers Conference. The show will be hosted by Grim Fandango and Brütal Legend’s Tim Schafer, promising a tongue-in-cheek good time even if our personal faves leave empty handed.

PS3P - Killzone 2 Review

02.10.09

"Finally, we can say that Killzone 2 is a reality and Guerrilla has created one of the best titles this year in its genre and if you leave in the previous would have been equally. A visual delight and playable for all of us that like Video games.

Now finally, you can call "Halo Killer" and like Visari say: "Victory is imminent!"

Only ‘Rule Breakers’ Buy Killzone 2 Promos

02.10.09

Spong Writes:Copies going for £212 on eBay.

After a US PlayStation Forum poster linked to a promo copy of Killzone 2 selling for £75 on eBay (at the time of the comment, £102 now) Seb Downie, QA manager for Guerrilla Games, posted, "I would strongly suggest not buying this. It is unclear whether this is a review build or something else. I can’t tell from the pic if it is final version or not. If not, you will at no point be able to play online with it. Also I am sure it says on the disc ‘Not for resale’ so this guy is breaking the rules."

Seller jms.ott (who has 100% positive feedback) disagrees. In an update to his eBay listing posted yesterday the seller wrote, "This game is the FUL GAME With Online play."

you’re scratching your head and wondering why anyone would pay £102 for a game that will be out in two and a half weeks for £40 (and £20 two weeks after that), don’t move that appendage. Other listings have been put up and completed at £192 and £211.94.

SOCOM.com Phase 2.0!

02.10.09

The new SOCOM.com has officially launched!

While SOCOM.com is still in beta, it’s open to the public and has many new features for SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation fans. There are a lot of changes to check out, so let’s get into it from top to bottom.

At the very top of the site is a scrolling ticker. It’s a live feed from My SOCOM, and it lists the top rated players in a variety of categories, number of players currently online, and even a feed of the titles of the latest blog posts. If you see something you like, click it to get more info!

Just below that is our new menu bar. Mousing over Community or My SOCOM reveals a couple of drop down menus. Community gives you direct access to the forums and the blog.

My SOCOM is pretty meaty. You can access My SOCOM itself, which is your gateway to the Leaderboards, your clan, profile, and many other options. If you need to check your mail, get the latest in clan updates, or compare your stats to a standout player, you can do that here. You can even recruit new clan members or view the manual for SOCOM: Confrontation.

To fully appreciate SOCOM.com, you’re going to have to log in with your PSN ID. Use the same email address and password you use on your PLAYSTATION 3. By doing this, you can use your PSN ID on the forums and in My SOCOM.

SOCOM.com is in beta and we’ve got some cool new features coming your way in the near future. Stay tuned, and come on over and check us out.

NYCC hands-on: Infamous (PS3)

02.10.09

Click to embiggen.

A huge shadow has been cast over Sony’s upcoming Infamous — and it’s called Prototype. It’s strange that two very similar games are coming out so soon to each other. Both games involve learning superpowers in a post-apocalyptic open world environment, but Prototype seemingly has more hype due to the graphic over-the-top nature of its presentation.

In spite of their similarities, the two games play very differently. Whereas Prototype has an immediate hook, Infamous is a more meticulous affair, taking its time to draw the player into its world. Prototype is more of a beat-em-up, with easy lock-ons and quick melee combos. Infamous, on the other hand, plays a lot like a traditional third person shooter, with the slow progression of a RPG. It may be a bit less flashy than its competitor, but it has the potential to be far more substantial and rewarding.
